Third annual CoDiFI training workshop
On August 6th and 7th, 2026, the Cornell Digital Forestry Initiative (CoDiFI) held its third annual training workshop, welcoming 28 participants from four states — Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York. Attendees came from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, SUNY ESF, Penn State, the Adirondack League Club, the University of Maryland, The Nature Conservancy, and Cornell.
The workshop covered the fundamentals of digital forestry tools — uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and mobile laser scanning (MLS) — with a particular focus on lidar. Sessions ran from hands-on field data collection through data processing to extracting the key biometric information that feeds downstream analysis.
Participants left with practical knowledge of how to apply these tools across a range of forestry contexts, from ecological research to applied forest management.
